Unheeded Prayers

When distracted during the Liturgy, it can be helpful to constantly pray, "Lord, have mercy." It will focus your mind on Christ and the words of the Liturgy. If you cannot hear the prayers, constantly pray "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." If memory is accurate, St. Ignatius Brianchaninov recommended this use of the Jesus Prayer, but the reference is allusive.

The Gulag of Pitesti

"Slavery to ideas is as serious a form of slavery as any other. Through His Church, Jesus offers you the deep mystery of His Divinity and His friendship. you are no longer called a slave but a friend if you discover the mystery of divine things." - Fr. George Calciu (Fourth Meditation, Sermons to Young People)

A Pilgrim's Way

"If Christ was punished on our behalf, then we are never forgiven, because punishment and forgiveness are mutually exclusive.... This is the concept of God, which is really the foundation of modern atheism." - Archbishop Lazar Puhalo

Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica

"We must bear everything patiently and forgive all. If we have good thoughts and desires, these thoughts will give us peace and joy in this life and even more so in eternity. Then we will see that there is no death, that the Lord has vanquished death, and that he has given us eternal life." - Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica

St Herman of Alaska

"A true Christian is made by faith and love toward Christ. Our sins do not in the least hinder our Christianity, according to the word of the Saviour Himself. He deigned to say: not the righteous have I come to call, but sinners to salvation; there is more joy in heaven over one who repents then over ninety righteous ones. Likewise concerning the sinful woman who touched His feet, He deigned to say to the the Pharisee Simon: to one who has love, a great debt is forgiven, but from one who has no love, even a small debt will be demanded. From these judgments a Christian should bring himself to hope and joy, and not in the least accept an inflicted despair. Here one needs the shield of faith.

Russians Defend Christianity

"And when you hear that we look for a kingdom, you suppose, without making any inquiry, that we speak of a human kingdom; whereas we speak of that which is with God, as appears also from the confession of their faith made by those who are charged with being Christians, though they know that death is the punishment awarded to him who so confesses. For if we looked for a human kingdom, we should also deny our Christ, that we might not be slain; and we should strive to escape detection, that we might obtain what we expect. But since our thoughts are not fixed on the present, we are not concerned when men cut us off; since also death is a debt which must at all events be paid." - St. Justin Martyr, First Apology, Chapter 11

Valaam Monastery

"There always were a lot of monasteries in Russia.  People who lived there were from very backgrounds and social positions but they were united by the same desire--desire to communicate with God."

Revival of Orthodoxy Exhibit in Moscow

“In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.” - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Ostrov (The Island) - Entire Film

"The Conferences" on concealing virtue, as holy fools do:

"Those who adapt themselves to others' weaknesses gain much richer fruits than those who hold fast to their own promises, and they have declared that it is more sublimely virtuous to conceal one's abstinence by this necessary and humble lie, as has been said, than to reveal to it by proudly indicating the truth." - Abba Joseph (17.23.2)
